Goals

Goal Statement: To improve my intonation and increase the precision of my pronunciation in order to speak more clearly. Properly reproducing distinct vowel and consonant sounds has been a challenge for me in English as well, and so I hope to learn it properly with this new language. I also aim to improve the speed at which I can read, recall, and reproduce Japanese vocabulary and grammar, which will help me read and recite with better pace and confidence.

Activities: In order to work towards these goals, I will focus on the following:
  • Attend the Japanese language table at Mathey on Tuesdays as often as possible to practice conversational Japanese with others.
  • Listen more actively to pronunciation while viewing Japanese media, and practice shadowing short segments as I watch. (An excuse to watch anime for practice!)
  • Collect every new vocabulary term I encounter into an Anki flashcard deck, and do a brief (10-minute) review session at least twice daily.
  • Meet and practice with my Language Fellows Program mentor at least every other week.
  • Practice reading any online beginner resources I can find with furigana annotations, such as NHK NEWS WEB EASY
